LM: I like to look to nature for inspiration, as well as look at street trends and refine them to make them my own. GC: Where do you get inspiration for your designs? To date, we have provided 24 girls for girls in Kenya, South Africa, Jamaica, and Haiti with scholarship, provided teacher training in Afghanistan, and build a school in Jamaica. I decided to support her cause by donating 50% of the net profits of Body Bijou to GirlsHelpingGirls in an effort to help her raise money. My sister then decided to found GirlsHelpingGirls, a non profit organization that works to raise the global low status of women through education. When we came home, my sister did some research on the low status of women around the world, and realized that this was not just a problem in Kenya, but it was a global problem. Only a handful of girls in the community had access to an education, while the others were stuck in poverty. While in Kenya, my sister and I saw the difference an education can make in the life of a girl if you educate a woman, you educate her family and her community as a whole, and the cycle of poverty can begin to break. L M: Two summers ago, my family took a vacation to rural Kenya to build a school. GC: What inspired you to help other girls in need? After perfecting my craft, I wanted to share my creations with the world, so I created Body Bijou. I really enjoyed the unit, and from there I taught myself more techniques, as well as took some lessons with a jewelry artisan. LM: I learned how to make jewelry in a grade 7 art unit at school. GC: How and why did you decide to create Body Bijou? Pretty incredible, right? I decided to ask Linda a few questions to get to know her, and Body Bijou, a bit better. She tells him details that exclude the man arrested at the crime scene. Seo uses the story to find the killer's only surviving victim. He does mention a mysterious person who rises out of the outhouses at a local school this fits with a story that two local schoolgirls told Seo on the night of the most recent murder. But despite their beating him, his improvised "confession" never fits the details of the crime. After a chase, they apprehend him, thinking he is the killer. The next night, Park, Cho and Seo stake out the crime scene and interrupt a man masturbating there. Despite a stakeout, the killer eludes them on the next rainy night and kills a woman near a gypsum mine. Inspector Kwon, the police force's diligent but unrecognized female officer, also has determined that the same obscure song is requested on the local radio station on the night of each crime. Seo determines Baek is too weak and scarred to commit such an elaborate crime and, after closely studying the crime reports, deduces that the killer strikes only on rainy nights and targets women wearing red. Seo Tae-yoon, a detective from Seoul with more scientific training in crime scene analysis, volunteers to assist them. Park's partner Cho beat confessions out of Baek. He questions a scarred mentally handicapped boy, Baek Kwang-ho, because he used to follow one of the victims around town. Park claims he has a way of determining suspects by eye contact. Other artists including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir as well as Vincent Van Gogh, all used the pigment instead of the more expensive ultramarine pigment. He saw it as a better alternative to ultramarine blue because of its superior intensity and contrast. In the early 19 th century, the watercolorist, John Varley, incorporated cobalt blue instead of ultramarine blue into his paintings. Artists over the years have used the cobalt blue color in their paintings. This pigment then was commercially produced by various manufacturers. This blue cobalt pigment was more stable and lightfast than previous versions. In the 19 th century, a French chemist by the name of Louis Jacques Thénard came up with the cobalt blue pigment that was a combination of cobalt oxide and aluminum oxide, and entirely alumina-based pigment. However, even though it was cheaper, it did have a tendency to turn an ugly grayish-green, when too much oil was added to it when painting. This particular cobalt blue pigment was more affordable than ultramarine blue, which was expensive and derived from lapis lazuli. ![]() Since the Middle Ages, there has also been cobalt blue smalt, which is powdered glass that contains cobalt oxide. The cobalt blue pigment is a color that has been utilized for a long time by various cultures, for example, to color Chinese porcelain and ceramics. This then became known as cobalt, which was eventually recorded as a color name in the late 18 th century. In Germany, medieval miners used the term Kobold, which was a type of malicious spirit, that they believed replaced the real silver with this toxic silver substitute. This is where the name cobalt blue originated. When these imitation silver metals were melted down, they released toxic chemicals, which were dangerous to inhale. However, in the past, other metals could also be mistaken for silver in the mining process. One of the main metals we have mined over the years is silver, and we have created some amazing jewelry and other items with it. However, there are safe paints used today that can imitate the cobalt blue color. The resultant bright cobalt blue pigment is considered toxic and is also not very eco-friendly and synthesizing alternatives that are less toxic and similar in color, has been challenging. The cobalt blue pigment is made by applying heat and pressure, also known as sintering, to cobalt oxide and aluminum oxide. The highly saturated bright cobalt blue is a little lighter than navy blue, but it is darker than sky blue. The cobalt blue color can be described as being a vibrant and darker shade of blue. 7.2 What Color Is Similar to Cobalt Blue?.3.4 Triadic and Tetradic Color Combinations. Climatology of the vertical profile of the atmosphere leeward of the Andes was built from daily rawinsonde data from Mendoza Aero for May-August 1974/1983. The forecast was built for May-August 1974/1983, and was verified against a series of cases recorded in the Mendoza Aero and San Juan Aero weather stations for May-August 2005/2014.It made use of the Stepwise Discriminant Analysis (SDA) and rawinsonde data from Mendoza Aero as predictors, with the following input variables: surface pressure, temperature, dew point, and the zonal and meridional components of the wind on surface and of the fixed levels up to 200 hPa.The variables selected as predictors by the SDA were: surface pressure, dew point depression at 850 hPa, meridional wind component at 850 hPa, and zonal wind component at 400 hPa. This research seeks, first, to validate the skill of a statistical forecast of zonda based on the behavior of the vertical structure of the atmosphere and, second, to describe the climatology of the vertical profile leeward of the Andes. Zonda is a strong, warm, very dry wind associated with adiabatic compression upon descending the eastern slopes of the Andes Cordillera in western-central Argentina. ![]() The phone design of 123 Top, and 789 Bottom was merely based on the research done by the Bell's labs: The decision by Bell Labs, or whomever, to reverse the layout was thoughtless at best, stupid at worst. Imagine my shock when reversed digital keys appeared on telephones. This was also in the days of rotary phones. Mistakes were extremely rare, and required a redo of the entire document. ![]() I became very fast at this touch based skill, as my eyes were on the numbers on paper (there was no visual feedback - just the numbers that were printing on the tape, but you didn't look at that. Index finger was for the left column, next two for adjacent ones. The keyboard layout was identical to present computer layouts as well present digital calculators. In the early sixties I took a year out of university and got a job in the internal audit department at the head office of a large insurance company in Toronto.Ī substantial part of my job involved using an electromechanical calculator to check figures submitted by various departments. This might be the reason that the more natural ordering is used, since there's no reason to complicate. Since phone numbers have a fixed number of digits which randomly scattered, the Benford's law doesn't apply here, which means all the digits occur with similar frequencies. This is why the zero key is especially large. Therefore it's sensible to put digits 1, 2, and 3 to the bottom row, as it's closer to the enter and also user reaches them easier.Īs pointed out in the comments, 0 tends to occur very frequently as well, due to rounding using the decimal number system. The graph is something like this and shows heavy bias against the digit "1". It says, that digits 1,2,3 occur more often than 7,8,9 when dealing with random, arbitrarily big numbers, which numbers that users type into calculators, in fact, are. You probably have heard of the Benford's law, also known as the "First digit law". Since I come from mathematics background, this is the first thing that comes to mind. ![]() However, records of AT&T Labs' research clearly invalidate it. There's also a theory that phone engineers wanted to slow down people who were fast at entering numerical data, which would jam lines and produce dialing errors, so they reversed the layout. Still, when it came time to place a numeric keypad on a computer keyboard, the calculator model with 7-8-9 at the top prevailed. It turns out that decision was largely arbitrary: no one had done any research about which layout was most convenient for users. When Bell Labs began exploring keypad layouts in the late 1950s they contacted all of the leading calculator manufacturers to find out why they had chosen to put low numbers at the bottom and high numbers at the top rather than the other way around. It is common practice today to use the telephone-keypad layout when designing new products that utilize a keypad, such as Automated Teller Machines.Back then, the industry-standard typical calculator had nine columns of numbers, with 10 numbers in a column, the lowest digits at the bottom, starting with 0 and moving up to 9, and was basically a mechanical adding machine that closely resembled a cash register.By the time when the touch-tone telephone was being designed in the late 1950s, the calculator and adding-machine designers had already established a layout that had 7, 8 and 9 across the top row.Touch-tone key pad was designed to mimic the rotary dial with the "1" on top and the 7-8-9 on the bottom, and AT&T conducted user testing to confirm that this configuration helped eliminate dialing errors. Now you have a choice of the traditional telephone keypad diagram or a more diverse and secure alternate. There's this humongous article called Keyboard Trivia that has collected many of the theories and stories. So your combination word of "CHERRY" would then be an actual combination of 48-23-30. This arrangement was carefully researched so that each number contains one or more letters to represent (as close as we could get) to 10% of letter usage in the English language. However, our magnet includes an alternate diagram with letters on all numbers. This can reduce the number of usable combinations considerably. The only problem with this method is that there are no letters with the numbers 1 and 0. For example, you may choose the word, "CHERRY" and match the letters on the traditional telephone keypad to a combination of 24-37-79. For most people, it is easier to remember a word than several numbers. Just set your safe combination so the numbers match a six-letter word. Keep one of these on your safe to aid in memorizing your safe combination. This two-sided magnet has a traditional telephone keypad diagram on one side and an alternative diagram on the other.
